New directions in occupational health.

  The objectives, and achievements of this program at the West Virginia University Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health were described. The program was intended to create a trained group of health professionals with interest and experience in multidisciplinary problem solving for workplace prevention, and to address the occupational health and preventive medicine needs of the West Virginia/rural Appalachia workforce. During the grant period the program hired its new director and created the program plan for its residency. Faculty growth was immediate, and the student and faculty support aided occupational health training programs in the engineering college, and a unique awareness program in the business school. The program had also identified funding resources and participated in recruitment of additional epidemiologists for staff positions. Growth in resident education had begun in the year and a half since the program started. Externally funded research also had been attracted to the program in environmental education, prevention education, workplace medical surveillance, and workplace smoking cessation. The program had taken a leadership position in creating graduate public health degree programs for West Virginians. An independent clinic developed around the residency training program.
