Description:The occupational safety and health Educational Resource Center at the Johns Hopkins University was described. Professional degrees were offered in occupational medicine, occupational health nursing, industrial hygiene and injury prevention, and safety science. The development of the program was reviewed from its beginning in 1977 through to the present day. In the Division of Occupational Health, the following areas have been developed for research: occupational neurotoxicology and repetitive strain disorders, occupational epidemiology, occupational cancer and genotoxicity, occupational skin disease, and psychosocial work environment and risk communication. A new training program for occupational injury prevention and safety science had a strong epidemiological focus and a multidisciplinary approach which drew on a wide variety of disciplines to train leaders for a major new preventive thrust. The program included practical research aimed at the design and implementation of appropriate surveillance systems for occupational injuries, studies of risk factors for injury occurrence, development of prevention programs based on ergonomic, engineering and safety related disciplines, and the evaluation of the interventions proposed.
