Description:Studies of the effects of exposure to combinations of sulfur-dioxide (7446095) with sodium-sulfate (7757826) or ammonium-sulfate (7783202) at controlled relative humidities on the respiratory systems of animals or man were reported. Female COBS-guinea-pigs were exposed to 5 parts per million (ppm) SO2, 1mg/m3 ammonium- sulfate, or ammonium-sulfate plus 1, 5 or 10ppm SO2. When SO2 was given alone, the effects implicated the upper and/or central airways and occurred early in the exposure period. Effects associated with ammonium-sulfate exposure implicated the peripheral airways and either appeared or extended into the latter half of the exposure period. For human studies, 18 nonsmoking adults were exposed to a droplet aerosol of ammonium-sulfate (1.0mg/m3) alone; a dry aerosol of ammonium-sulfate plus SO2, or a droplet aerosol of ammonium- sulfate plus SO2. In these healthy subjects the average short term effects of the two inhaled agents, alone or combined, were slight. Ammonium-sulfate was mildly irritating alone, but did not show evidence of biological interaction with SO2. No evidence for additive or synergistic action was noted. [Description provided by NIOSH]
