Description:The final progress report of a study on noise reduction in the textile industry (SIC-3552) is presented. The project was active from April, 1974 through November, 1979. Research studies conducted during the project are summarized. Noise analysis methods were developed to identify noise sources in fly shuttle looms and looms without shuttles, and during twisting, texturing, and ring spinning operations. Noise energy from the transient impact of the components of fly shuttle looms was equally distributed among all loom components. Eliminating the vibration of any one component would reduce the noise level at the operator position by only 1 to 2 A-weighted decibels. Guidelines for determining the economic feasibility of applying engineering controls to reduce noise in the industry were established. A manual dealing with noise control in the textile industry was published in 1978. Nine research publications originated from the project. [Description provided by NIOSH]
