Description:Several types of respiratory protective hoods used by sandblasters are studied in two steel fabrication yards. MSA Gravimetric Dust Samplers are used to collect respirable dust samples outside and inside hoods during sandblasting. Colorimetric and X-ray diffraction techniques are applied to the samples for free silica determination. Workers wearing various types of air supplied hoods are exposed to an average level of silica (7631869) dust several times higher than the threshold limit value. Workers wearing nonair supplied hoods are found to be at the greatest risk. [Description provided by NIOSH]
