Description:Qualitative and semi-quantitative screening methods are often used in the field to determine if the concentration of a toxic substance exceeds regulatory or recommended standards. Since the test is performed in the field so that immediate compliance decisions can be made, accurate quantitative methods may not be available, and screening methods which are semi-quantitative or qualitative might be used. To ensure the quality of these tests and the decisions that are made based upon them, screening methods have to be evaluated with sufficient data and should meet some basic performance criteria before they are used. Although qualitative methods have different characteristics than semi-quantitative methods, the performance criteria for the two types of methods must be consistent. To unify the performance criteria, a performance function is used to characterize both the qualitative and semi-quantitative methods. False negative rate, false positive rate, sensitivity, and specificity are the key characteristics of screening methods. These characteristics are related to the uncertainty region associated with each method. [Description provided by NIOSH]
