  Pesticides are discussed in terms of chemical classification, use, environmental influence, and effects on human health. A chart presenting 12 common chemical classes of pesticides is included. Environmental pesticide pollution is attributed to uncontrolled marketing and use of unresearched products. A resurgence of pests resulting from development of genetic resistance and the extermination of natural predators is cited as an additional consequence of indiscriminate pesticide use. A table listing sources of occupational and nonoccupational human pesticide exposure is given. The author concludes that the general public is afforded a greater degree of protection from pesticide exposure because of governmental regulation than are the occupationally exposed, particularly agricultural workers, whose standards of regulation vary according to job classification and the regulatory agency handling that classification.
