Use of epidemiological data to prioritize construction ergonomic hand-tool exposure evaluations.

  Epidemiological studies have reported high rates of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (UEMSD), including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), for workers in the construction industry. Job factors related to design and use of hand tools have been identified as risk factors for developing UEMSDs. In order to prioritize future ergonomic hand-tool evaluations for construction workers, cross-sectional data from an UEMSD study was reanalyzed. The frequency that subjects' reported using specific manual and power hand tools was calculated. Odds ratios and 95% confidence limits were calculated using logistic regression to determine whether hand tool use was associated with CTS in general and among represented trades. Hand tool use and construction trade were significantly associated with CTS. The association between tool use and the prevalence of CTS was confirmed and the results suggest that among the four trades investigated the sheet metal trade should be a priority for future ergonomic tool evaluations. The results, however, do not specify which tools were associated with increased risk of CTS. More detailed information regarding tools used and tasks performed are needed to identify and target specific tools for intervention. [Description provided by NIOSH]
