Description:Immunoglobulins (Ig) are proteins with the ability to recognize and bind a broad diversity of antigens as well as to modulate subsequent effector responses to bound antigens. As a result, Ig plays a key role in both normal respiratory tract homeostasis and in pathology of the lung. Appropriate Ig responses promote clearance of antigens from the lung and minimize injury responses. In contrast, inadequate or inappropriate Ig responses can allow or actually induce lung injury. In this chapter, we briefly review mechanisms underlying antibody synthesis and secretion by B cells, physical and functional characteristics of Ig, and features specific to pulmonary antibody immunity. Humoral immunodeficiency syndromes relevant to the lung are also discussed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
