Description:The training manual for the NIOSH course Industrial Ventilation 588 is presented. The course assumes that the student is familiar with engineering design calculations. The basic principles of air physics are presented. Ventilation is discussed. Dilution ventilation topics are considered. Principles of hood design are presented. The section on hood design includes three problem sets and a laboratory. Steps in designing a balanced industrial exhaust system are listed. Two problem sets on industrial exhaust systems are included. Makeup and recirculated air are discussed. Problem sets dealing with designing makeup air equipment and specifying the fan capacity for a makeup air/recirculation system are given. Specifications and procedures for estimating the cost of an industrial ventilation system are provided. The section on ventilation system testing includes a problem set and four laboratories that deal with Pitot tubes, comfort ventilation system measurements, slot hood measurements, and procedures for testing a system. Industrial air movers (fans) are discussed. Specifications for industrial fans are enumerated and a problem set on fan selection is provided. Air cleaning devices are discussed.
