  A student manual concerning people, motivation, and training, as part of a course on safety program design and management is presented. The course was sponsored by the Division of Training and Manpower Development, NIOSH. The major objective of the module is to provide an up to date review of approaches to encourage safe work behavior and to enhance the ability of participants to appraise and develop safety programs. The module presents a survey of past, current, and conceptual approaches to occupational safety. The module is made up of seven lessons. The first lesson deals with motivation in occupational environments. Safety program design and management, satisfaction and dissatisfaction on the job, and high and low producing supervisors are discussed. The second lesson considers supervisor and employee involvement. Lesson 3 covers guidelines for behavior modification. The fourth lesson covers structure, interaction, and reinforcement. Transactional analysis, manifestations of the ego status, and time structuring are discussed. Lesson 5 deals with assertive feeling, knowing, and doing. The sixth lesson is concerned with guidelines for training. Lesson 7 covers the development and evaluation of safety programs. Description provided by NIOSH
