Description:The training manual for a course in industrial hygiene sponsored by NIOSH is presented. The course is designed to familiarize an individual with the fundamental principles of industrial hygiene, with the major emphasis being on hazard recognition, evaluation, and control. The course consists of an introduction and eight units. The introduction deals with topics such as legal aspects of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, threshold limits, basis concepts of industrial toxicology, and toxic substances in industry. The units cover gas and vapor sampling, air flow measurements, particulate sampling, industrial ventilation, heat stress, radiation, noise, and special topics. The special topics unit includes topics such as methods of hazard control, personal protective equipment, manufacturing protective materials, the walkthrough survey, legal aspects and recordkeeping, and electrical and mechanical hazards. The units on gas and vapor sampling, air flow measurements, industrial ventilation, heat stress, and noise include laboratory work.
