  Controlling dust during solids handling operations was discussed. Dust control in packaging areas was emphasized. According to the author, products that consist of finely divided solids escape into the workplace most frequently when flow is interrupted and the product is transferred from one container to another. Using multiwall bags as packages for finely divided powder/like products was discussed. Because of their cost effectiveness, multiwall bags were the most widely used packages for products. The many rapid openings and closings, product flow interruptions, and transfers that must occur when multiwall bag packaging is used, however, were sources of product leakage and workplace dust exposure. Dust exposures in multiwall bag packaging areas were affected by factors such as bag design, quality control, packer operation, variations in product density, filled bag handling, and bag emptying. The author states that the first step in any dust control program should consist of an audit of dust exposures associated with each factor. Dust collection should be considered secondary to dust prevention. The author concludes that finely divided solid products are necessary and become dust only when they escape uncontrolled into the workplace.
