Description:A method for sampler evaluation was tested with an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS). Size range was limited to measurements below 8 micrometers. A number of modifications were made to the APS to help perform the penetration curve measurements. Most of the measurements were made in the 1.5 to 2.5 liter per minute range to ensure that the flow into the center tube was approximately isokinetic. Penetration curves for a number of aerodynamic size selection devices were measured, including a cascade impactor, personal impactor sampler, personal respirable samplers, and nylon cyclone. Penetration curves of the cyclones and impactors were different when determined with a fibrous versus a non fibrous aerosol. Preliminary experiments over several months with several non fibrous and fibrous aerosols indicated a consistently lower median aerodynamic diameter when the aerodynamic selection devices were challenged with a fibrous aerosol. The author concludes that the APS can be successfully used to measure penetration curves of a number of aerodynamic size selection devices. [Description provided by NIOSH]
