    The rate of reaction and the extent of reaction were investigated for the dissolution of platinum and palladium from spent automotive catalysts. Empirical rate expressions were obtained from mass balances and the concentration-time data. The rate for both platinum and palladium was high at early stages of leaching and decayed rapidly up to about 110 min and 50 min, respectively. The rate remained very low after these times while proceeding to zero. The extent of reaction for both platinum and palladium was affected by leaching solution composition and bed height and/or catalyst weight. The extent of reaction for palladium increased for increasing ratios of (hcl):(hno3) and decreasing bed heights. The extent of reaction for platinum increased for decreasing ratios of (hcl):(hno3) and decreasing bed heights. The catalyst particle size did not appear to affect the extent of reaction for either platinum or palladium. [Description provided by NIOSH]
