    Oil constitutes an important part of our energy resource but domestic production is dropping while imports are rising. Increased reliance on imports can be reduced by synthetic fuels produced from oil shale deposits which contain about 600 billion barrels of oil equivalent in high-grade shale alone. The goal for shale oil production outlined in project independence is 1 million barrels per day by 1985. Oil shale research is part of the Bureau of Mines advancing mining technology program whose objectives are to develop, test, and demonstrate improved mining and waste management methods. Oil shale must be mined safely and economically with methods that permit maximum recovery of the resource with acceptable environmental impact. This report describes the oil shale deposits and technical and economic feasibility studies of underground and open pit mining systems and the modified in situ system. [Description provided by NIOSH]
