Description:Yields and characteristics of light oil in the gasoline boiling range were determined for six coals ranging in rank from low-volatile bituminous to lignite. The coals were hydrocarbonized at low temperature in a fixed-bed carbonizer, and the vapors produced were catalytically hydrorefined at hydrogen pressures of 300, 600, and 900 psig. Light oil produced in this manner was olefin free and rich in benzene, toluene, and xylene (btx), and would be suitable for blending in the production of nonleaded gasoline. A maximum btx yield of 76 lb was obtained from a ton of dry, ash-free high-volatile bituminous coal. Linear polynuclear aromatic compounds were found in the tar in sufficient amounts to make this a potential source of additional benzene, toluene, and xylene. [Description provided by NIOSH]
