Description:The causes, nature, and pathomechanisms of irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) were discussed in a workshop format. The presentations dealt with the following issues: clinical ICD syndromes; a comparison of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and ICD; the magnitude of the problem of ICD; the basic features and definitions of ICD; cellular immunologic characteristics of ICD; dermal antigen presenting cells and macrophages; the role of keratinocytes; T-lymphocyte function in ICD; cutaneous signals that initiate sensitivity and tolerance; barrier initiated mechanisms in ICD; effects on stratum corneum barrier function; electrical creation of aqueous pathways across skin and absorption; immunologic consequences of barrier perturbation; role of neuropeptides; role of cytokines; role of prostaglandins and other lipid mediators; in-vivo and in-vitro model systems for ICD; human models; cell culture techniques; transgenic mouse models; the prevention of ICD; and molecular mechanisms of ICD.
