U.S. creating agricultural OSHA centres.

  This note described the first two established centers for agricultural research, education, and disease and injury prevention. The first was established at the University of California at Davis. The second was established at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. The first purpose for the existence of the centers was to conduct research aimed at improving the occupational health and safety of agricultural workers and their families. The second purpose for the centers was to provide education and training related to agricultural health and safety. This education was to be made available to the workers themselves, graduate and professional students, health care professionals, and extension and outreach personnel. Epidemiological research was to form part of the educational focus, with one area being allergic contact dermatitis among the nursery workers in California. Another area of concern was the transport of pesticides home from the fields on worker skin and clothing. The center at Iowa was to expand the graduate education program at the university there in the areas of agricultural industrial hygiene, rural environmental health and applied ergonomics. Research projects underway at Iowa included experimental exposure to grain dusts, risks for airway disease among grain handlers, respiratory disease among dairy farmers, exposure of agricultural workers to chemicals, and agricultural disease and injury among farmers and farm families in the form of an epidemiological assessment.
