Description:Recent improvements in measurement techniques used by NIOSH for the determination of asbestos were described. Updates in phase contrast and transmission electron microscopic methods for asbestos analysis were described as was a newly introduced polarized light microscopic technique for bulk analysis of asbestos. The results of studies examining the impact of electrostatic effects on the accuracy of asbestos fiber sampling were presented as well. Recommendations for decreasing electrostatic effects during asbestos sampling included the use of conductive samples and high sampling flow rates, electrical grounding of conductive samples, and removal of sources of electric fields. Quality assurance procedures including programs administered by the American Industrial Hygiene Association were described. Issues currently being addressed in this field such as the development of automated processes for asbestos analysis and techniques for separation of fibers based on diameter and length were reviewed.
