  The national strategy used by the United States for the prevention of occupational injury and disease was described. Three public health functions designed to improve the safety and health of workers executed by NIOSH (research, recommendations, and training) were described and discussed. Research methods described included NIOSH initiatives associated with surveillance such as the National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities system, the Sentinel Event Notification System for Occupational Health Risks, the Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance program, and the Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluations system, as well as epidemiologic, field, laboratory, and intervention and control techniques. The National Health Hazard Evaluation program was described as an example of the role of the NIOSH in making health, exposure, and working condition recommendations. The NIOSH has also been instrumental in making recommendations for standards to other government agencies such as OSHA and the Mine Safety and Health Administration and in disseminating information by issuing numerous publications, conducting public information services, providing public access, and supporting two online databases. Several examples of NIOSH funded training programs were presented, including the Educational Resource Centers concept, Project Minera, Safety and Health Awareness for Preventive Engineering, and Educating Physicians in Occupational Health and the Environment.
