Description:This report discussed methods for reconstructing past exposures to noise from work histories as well as military and free time exposures to noise. An object oriented simulation and analytical system was developed to process acoustical samples with a multimedia sound card. Impulse reconstruction was based on the superposition principle of exponential impulses. Parameters for reconstruction of impulse noise were frequency, sampling speed, number of samples, amplitude, rise duration, decay duration, and number of impulses and peak positions. The selected object oriented environment can be used to produce executable windows programs. The developed system was first used in a transaxial car parts manufacturing facility in Ohio. Measurements were taken at the position of the worker's ear with portable two channel recorder. Typically 10 to 20 time domain blocks were needed for varying signals to determine statistically, valid characteristics. Analysis of noise measurements gave valuable information concerning the maximum peak levels causing immediate damage in the inner ear. The average noise equivalent level related to the long term accumulation of hearing damage. In the epidemiological studies concerning long term effects of noise on hearing, the retrospective information can be used to simulate the exposures. [Description provided by NIOSH]
