Description:The executive summary of the proceedings of the National Fishing Industry Safety and Health (FISH) workshop was presented. FISH was a workshop sponsored by NIOSH held at Anchorage, Alaska from October 9 to 11 1992 dedicated to increasing awareness of and developing ways of preventing accidents in the Alaska commercial fishing industry. FISH stemmed from the establishment of the Alaska Activity by NIOSH in 1991. The Alaska Activity was a surveillance based program directed toward developing interventions that would prevent the large number of occupational injuries and deaths occurring in the Alaska commercial fishing industry. From 1980 through 1985, the Alaskan agriculture, forestry, and fishing industrial sector, dominated by commercial fishing, had the highest fatality rate in the United States, 293.6 fatalities per 100,000 workers. The workshop sessions dealt with safety and health in the commercial fishing industry, fatal and nonfatal injuries in the Alaska commercial fishing industry, surveillance of work related fatalities in the Alaska commercial fishing industry, federal requirements for fishing vessels, prevention and intervention strategies, promoting a safe and healthy commercial fishing industry, providing safety and health services for the Alaska commercial fishing industry, future directions for promoting safety in the Alaska commercial fishing industry, and specific preventive methods for preventing or reducing fatal accidents in the Alaska commercial fishing industry.
