Chemical protective clothing standard test method development. Final report: Degradation test method.

  The findings of an eight laboratory round robin evaluation of a proposed American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard test method for evaluating chemical protective clothing were presented. The purpose of the report was to evaluate the proposed ASTM degradation test method, and recommend changes that would result in improved consistency and reliability. Protective clothing materials were selected based on their level of use in commercial chemical protective clothing, the project team's subjective estimates of degradation resistance, and availability of samples. The findings of the study suggest that as indicated by wide variations in thickness, weight and elongation test data, the proposed ASTM standard test method for evaluating protective clothing materials for resistance to degradation by liquid chemicals should not be recommended for use in its present form. The test method does appear to be valuable in that it permits measurement of important physical properties, can be relatively easy to perform, and does not require a commitment of costly apparatus or manpower. Improvements as recommended by the participating laboratories and drawn from the review and conversion of raw test data may well eliminate most of the precision problems encountered in this project.
