Description:An alternative approach to modeling was explored in which three dimensional (3-D) solubility parameters are used to obtain explicit estimates of solubility, and the solvent diffusion coefficient. These can then be used in Fickian diffusion equations to determine breakthrough times (BT) and steady state permeation rates (SSPR). Immersion test solubility values of 40 organic solvents in commercial Viton glove samples were used to develop and assess the model performance. For a subset of 17 solvents tested, the effect of temperature on solubility from 25 to 37 degrees-C was predicted within 6%. The solvent/polymer 3-D solubility parameter differences needed to be weighted in order to obtain accurate solubility estimates. However, in most cases a single weighting factor was enough to bring estimated values within a factor or two of the experimental values for members of a given chemical class. The model as developed permitted the independent examination of the influence of several key variables which had not been previously incorporated into solubility parameter based permeation models.
