Description:Airway responses to cotton dust extracts (CDE) and cotton bract extracts (CBE) were compared. Eleven healthy nonsmokers (eight males and three females) were subjected to a double blind challenge test, and pulmonary function was tested every 15 minutes for a period of 2 hours (hr). A methacholine dose response study was performed 2hr after extract challenge. The protocol was repeated 1 week later with the extract not used in the first test. Results showed that CDE contained a slightly higher endotoxin content than CBE, and that CBE had higher chemotactic peptide levels. Lung function parameters, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and maximum expiratory flow 60% of baseline vital capacity below total lung capacity (MEF40%) showed progressive reduction, with a maximum drop at about 1hr after challenge. Responses to CDE and CBE were similar. The average maximal responses to CBE and CDE were drops in MEF40% to 68. Responses to methacholine were much greater than the baseline responses, but did not differ from one another. The authors conclude that CBE and CDE are potent bronchoconstrictors, that they cause both acute and subacute responses, and that changes in lung function following exposure to the two agents follow a similar time course.
