Description:A study was conducted on methods used for decontamination of glove materials demonstrating matrix release following exposure to liquid chemicals. Matrix release by the glove material/liquid chemical combination was assumed if, after saturation of the glove material by the challenge chemical, the entrapped chemical was released for at least 72 hours and if a significantly different breakthrough time of the glove material was seen upon reexposure to the test chemical. Three decontamination methods, air drying at 25 degrees-C, a manual detergent wash for 15 minutes, and elevated temperature washing and drying, were tested on samples of neoprene and nitrile gloves exposed to n-butyl-acetate (123864) or para-xylene (1330207) in a permeation cell. Matrix release was not prevalent in the nitrile glove after exposure to the test chemicals or in the neoprene sample exposed to para-xylene. A decrease in breakthrough times was seen in neoprene gloves exposed to n-butyl-acetate compared with unexposed gloves. Effective decontamination of n-butyl-acetate exposed gloves was achieved only with elevated temperature washing and drying. [Description provided by NIOSH]
