Description:A new method was proposed for pressure fit testing half and full facepiece respirators. Good agreement was obtained between the new method and the conventional method of fit testing. A low cost aerosol generator was developed and used to test disposable respirators. The generator consisted of a Wright nozzle with a solid plate and a virtual impactor, producing aerosols with a variable particle size distribution. The respirator penetration was measured with corn-oil aerosol. The penetration through leak sites depended on the particle size and air flow rate. Up to a 160% difference was identified in the flow ratio for two brands of cartridge filters. Flow ratios were smaller than the fit factors from the conventional aerosol methods, but the two methods were correlated. The authors conclude that the faceseal fit test can be related to the protection factor for half mask and full facepiece respirators. [Description provided by NIOSH]
