Description:The extent to which the electronic and steric properties of olefins and trapping reagent can affect the selectivity of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor for a series of olefin vapors was studied. Models for predicting vapor/coating sorption based on the physical and chemical properties of the coatings and vapors were investigated in an effort to establish selection criteria for sorptive SAW sensor array coatings. Sensor response data for two coatings exposed to over 30 organic vapors were used to examine four predictive models. Preliminary findings suggest that semiquantitative prediction of SAW sensor responses was indeed possible. SAW sensor coatings containing reactive trapping agents were used to selectively detect various olefin vapors in an alternative approach. Advantage was taken of the ability for certain olefins to replace ethylene in certain types of reagents. Significant changes were identified in sensor response due to subtle differences in the steric properties of the olefin vapors and the steric and electronic properties of the pyridine ligand in the trapping reagent.
