Description:Measurements were made of the concentrations of several polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) determined in air samples collected in four underground coal mines. The mutagenic activity of diesel particulate matter (DPM) collected in these mines was also examined. In general, the mine haulageway atmosphere levels of DPM, soluble organic fraction (SOF), PAH, and biological activity were statistically similar for all four mines studied. Differences in these levels between the mines were attributable to differences in parameters such as vehicle type, engine operation and maintenance, ventilation efficiencies, and fuel composition. The importance of operating at higher loads with well maintained vehicles was shown by the consistently lower levels of SOF and biologically active PAH at one mine. Considerable variations were noted in the potential contributions of intake air to haulageway DPM, SOF, PAH and activity levels both between and within mines, with the maximum potential contribution to the observed haulageway values typically being no more than 25%. The authors conclude that managing the efficient operation of diesel vehicles can reduce these values. [Description provided by NIOSH]
