Description:This book was made up of papers which formed the proceedings of an international workshop held at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, on April 18/19, 1988. The workshop reviewed the state of the art for exposure assessment in epidemiologic studies and the application of health studies to hazard control. The objective was to share new ideas, to identify both consensus and controversy and to learn new concepts, methods, and approaches. The overall purpose was to initiate the development of paradigms for exposure assessment, that is, sets of basic tenets that can guide future monitoring activities. Specific topics discussed at the workshop included alternative ways of monitoring occupational exposure, measurement of vapors and gases, the measurement of aerosols in relation to risk assessment, the use of markers to measure exposures to complex mixtures, assessing relevant exposures to airborne irritants, exposure dose relationships, development of biological monitoring as a tool for exposure assessment, the use of models to investigate the toxicokinetic behavior of organic solvents, issues in the epidemiologic evaluation of exposure effect relationships, new methods for evaluating health effects, retrospective exposure assessment, exposure assessment challenges presented by investigations of reproductive effects in the semiconductor industry, biological monitoring strategies, environmental sampling, individual versus group differences in exposure risk, and exposure assessment strategies.
