Endotoxins in various work environments in agriculture.

  The levels of gram negative bacterial endotoxins were determined in several different agricultural materials and agricultural work environments. Samples included corn silage, baled hay, bulk oats, and airborne dusts collected from three barns. Endotoxin contamination was detected in all samples that were tested. Endotoxin levels in the anaerobic samples of silage were similar to those in the aerobic samples of silage. Corn silage from New York had 104.07 endotoxin units/milligram (EU/mg) at the top surface and 6.79EU/mg at 15 to 20 centimeters below the surface. Illinois corn silage contained 1870.39EU/mg, baled hay treated with a spoilage inhibitor contained 25.76 EU/mg, and stored oats contained 122.66 EU/mg. Dusts generated by vibrating the bulk samples in an acoustical dust generator showed the highest concentration in the sample to be from the top surface. Actual workplace measurements of airborne endotoxin concentrations were taken for bedding chopping and silo unloading operations. Endotoxin concentrations of the personal total dust samples for bedding chopping ranged from 438.60 to a high of 14294.95 endotoxin units/cubic meter. Large differences in airborne endotoxin levels were noted for area total dust endotoxin concentrations during silo unloading as well with the air in one silo containing approximately a 55 fold higher endotoxin concentration than the air in the other silo.
