Description:A study was undertaken of potential hazardous working conditions in the spinning and cutting areas of a large viscose rayon manufacturing facility. The study centered around six spinnermen and eight cuttermen, and their possible exposure to hazardous levels of carbon-disulfide (75150) (CS2). Acute exposures for cuttermen ranged from less than 20 parts per million (ppm) to greater than 2000ppm. In 52% of these measures the concentration was over 100ppm. Shift time weighted average concentrations ranged from 10 to 130ppm. End of shift iodine-azide values were abnormal in 65% of the cuttermen. Symptoms resulting from CS2 exposure were noted in 78% of the group. Based on the results of the study and the finding of excessively high environmental levels of CS2, abnormal iodine- azide biological tests in workers, and significant occurrence of symptomatology consistent with exposure to CS2, the authors conclude that a hazard existed at this site to cuttermen, chargehands and others working in the cutter area. The respirator program in effect for cuttermen was ineffective in protecting this group of workers. Spinnermen, and other workers were occasionally exposed to levels of CS2 which were potentially toxic. Description provided by NIOSH
