Description:Reproductive effects and developmental toxicity of pesticides were reviewed. Topics included: mechanisms of action of reproductive toxicants; direct acting reproductive toxicants; structural similarity; chemical reactivity; indirect acting reproductive toxicants; metabolic activation; hormonal disruption; clinical manifestations suggesting reproductive toxicity; prenatal reproductive toxicants; prepubertal reproductive toxicants; adult reproductive toxicants; male reproductive toxicants; female reproductive toxicants; reproductive effects associated with organophosphates and carbamates; reproductive toxicity of chlorinated hydrocarbons; mathematical models for reproductive toxicology; methods for risk assessment in reproductive toxicology; safety factors; database development; pharmacokinetic models; dose response models; physiologically based models; expert systems; and in-vitro and in-vivo models. The authors recommend that animal and human studies be redesigned to evaluate the mechanisms of acute and chronic reproductive toxicities associated with pesticides. More stringent developmental toxicity studies and the development of new methodologies are also recommended. [Description provided by NIOSH]
