  Ergonomic intervention studies aimed at promoting health and productivity in the computerized office were presented. Physical ergonomic interventions and job/task redesign were investigated, including: workspace influence on worker performance and satisfaction; case studies concerning ergonomic intervention for better health and productivity; employee comfort, satisfaction and productivity at Aetna; health and performance effects of ergonomically designed workstations; postural load and the incidence of musculoskeketal illness; towards optimizing physical activity in video display terminal (VDT) and other office work; and a case study of the effect of exercise breaks on musculoskeletal strain among data entry operators. Organizational approaches and issues in the redesign of VDT work included: perspectives on ergonomic issues in a VDT office; organizational culture and VDT policies; opportunities for preventing mental health disturbances with new office technologies; and support of a work group during implementation of a new computer system and job redesign in a life insurance company. Clinical evaluation and management of health complaints were investigated, including: vision and the VDT, clinical findings; and neck and arm pain in office workers, causes and management.
