Description:A newly developed monitoring badge for vinyl-chloride (75014) was described. The badge consisted of a silicone backed membrane containing activated charcoal mounted in a 41 by 48 millimeter frame. The sampling area of the membrane was approximately 15 square centimeters. The entire assembly weighed less than 35 grams. After use, the membrane was removed and the trapped vinyl-chloride was desorbed and quantitated by gas chromatography. Laboratory testing showed that the response of the monitor to vinyl-chloride was linear over the range 5 parts per billion (ppb) to 50 parts per million (ppm). The precision at 1ppb was within the +/-50 percent limit specified by NIOSH. The permeation rate of vinyl-chloride varied less than 5 percent over the temperature range 0 to 40 degrees-C. The response of the monitor was not affected by relative humidity over the range 0 to 100 percent. When tested for interferences by sulfur-dioxide, nitrogen-dioxide, chlorine, and ethylene-dichloride, only ethylene-dichloride affected the results, causing a large positive deviation. In a field study with parallel sampling by a Sipin pump sampler, differences in the measured vinyl- chloride concentrations were generally on the order of only 0.03 to to use. It is insensitive to temperature and humidity changes and most interferents. It should be well suited for the personal monitoring programs required by OSHA. [Description provided by NIOSH]
