Description:Information was provided on all six isomers of xylenol, including chemical structure, biological activity, production, manufacturers, uses, synonyms, chemical and physical properties, distributors, manufacturing processes, control technology, work practices, impurities, occupational exposures, ongoing studies, and sources of additional information. The isomers discussed included 2,3-xylenol (526750), 2,4-xylenol (105679), 2,5-xylenol (95874), 2,6-xylenol (576261), 3,4-xylenol (95658), and 3,5-xylenol (108689). The xylenols were all moderately toxic with medial lethal toxicity doses ranging between 383 to 980mg/kg for mice and 296 to 3200mg/kg for rats. Acute oral poisoning caused dyspnea, disturbance of motor coordination, colonic spasms, and paralysis. Mucous membranes were irritated and respiratory activity affected through inhalation exposure. They were rapidly absorbed through the skin, causing minor skin irritation. Minor effects were manifested on the central nervous system as well as minor tissue damage to the liver, spleen, and kidney. The levels of sulfhydryl groups in the blood and internal organs of exposed animals were all affected by xylenol exposure. [Description provided by NIOSH]
