Airborne endotoxin concentrations in the cotton industry: effect of cotton growing area.

  The results of endotoxin assays performed on two sets of vertical elutriator dust samples collected in cotton industry workplaces were presented. One set was from a NIOSH survey of 35 gins and the other set was from OSHA mandated environmental surveillance conducted at six selected yarn production mills. Four gins were surveyed from the west, three from the lower southwest, six from the upper southwest, 15 from the south central and seven from the southeast. The geometric mean dust levels of cotton mill work areas ranged from 72 for western spinning to 103 micrograms/cubic meter (microg/m3) for carding. This compared to geometric mean dust concentrations ranging from 110 to 264microg/m3 for drawing and for opening for the three Delta mills, respectively. Endotoxin measurements indicated the western mills work area geometric means ranged from 5 to 17 endotoxin units/cubic meter for spinning and carding, respectively, compared with 49 and 150 endotoxin units/cubic meter for drawing and opening, respectively. The greatest level of contamination was noted in samples from the winding area of Delta mills, where the geometric mean contamination level approached nearly 900 endotoxin units/cubic meter. The authors conclude that the observed endotoxin contamination variability may have important implications for respiratory effects in workers exposed to cotton dust. [Description provided by NIOSH]
