Description:A study of the influence of grade on the amount of gram negative rod bacteria (GNRB) in raw cotton was conducted. Baled lots of raw cotton representing all grades from strict middling through strict good ordinary (SGO) were processed in an experimental carding room. Airborne particulates and GNRB concentrations were measured simultaneously. Raw cotton, cleaned lint, leaflike trash, and seed trash were isolated and their GNRB and endotoxin contents were measured. Larger numbers of GNRB were found in cotton grades that contained more leaf and in raw cotton that contained more yellow color. With the exception of the SGO grade, the airborne concentrations of GNRB during processing of raw cotton tended to increase in proportion to the leaf content of the cotton. Cleaned lint had GNRB concentrations at least one order of magnitude lower than those of the corresponding raw cotton samples. The GNRB content of leaflike and seed trash was equal to or greater than that of the original raw cotton. Endotoxin content of the plant materials was not correlated with their GNRB content. The authors conclude that raw cottons with yellow color contain more GNRB that those with white color, cotton grades with more leaf contain more GNRB, and that trash particles themselves may be the ultimate source of microbial contamination of raw cotton lint.
