Collaboration between social workers and doctors in providing rural primary health care can be viewed as a preventive activity. The concepts of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention were presented. Developments in social worker/doctor collaboration in Sweden, the Netherlands and other European countries, Canada, and the United States were discussed. Expanding the doctor/social worker collaboration in rural primary health care was considered and the rationale for expanding collaboration was discussed. The means by which collaboration could be expanded were reviewed. Policy issues involved in expanded doctor/social worker collaboration as they pertained to western industrial and third world countries were discussed. Research issues involved in integrating doctor/social worker collaboration in providing rural primary health care were summarized.
