Description:An interdisciplinary approach for delivering primary health care in a rural setting was described. The experiences of the University of Utah Primary Health Care Project that provided primary medical care to people living in the Uintah Basin, Utah, were reviewed. The components of the program consisted of University administrators, a health screening council consisting of the Vice President of Health Sciences and the Deans of the professional schools involved in the project which coordinated the various professional disciplines, an interdisciplinary primary health care committee consisting of campus based faculty representatives of each department involved in the project, and the Vernal Family Health Care Center (VFHC) which delivered the health services. The VFHC was comprised of physicians, nurses, clinical pharmacists, social workers, support staff, and student counterparts. The program had been in operation for 3 years. Data for the period August 1977 to January 1978 were presented. During that period 955 patients were seen at the VFHC. The largest number of patients had mental health related problems, followed by patients with marriage, divorce, parenting, health, and group related problems in that order. Guidelines for promoting an interdisciplinary approach to rural health care developed from the experiences gained with the project were listed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
