  The fundamentals of occupational health nursing practices are reviewed. Occupational health and occupational health nursing are defined. The intent of OSHA and its implications for occupational health nursing practices are explored. Methods are described to: determine health hazards in the work environment; eliminate or control hazards identified; provide optimum rehabilitative care for injured workers or those with work related illness; assure compatibility of workers' abilities with the demands of the job; and promote worker health through education and health conservation activities. The legal aspects of nursing are discussed. The nursing process, which includes assessment, planning implementation, and evaluation is detailed. The scope, objectives, and functions of occupational health programs are outlined. These include preplacement health assessments, periodic health appraisals, initial care and rehabilitation for injuries and illnesses occurring at work, health and safety education, immunizations, and identification and control of potential health hazards. Implementation of these goals by health assessment, industrial hygiene, industrial safety, records and reports, health education, and program planning are discussed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
