Description:A study of work loads experienced by dairy farmers was conducted. The cohort consisted of 11 farmers, six females, on four dairy farms in the Kuzumaki District of Japan. The work activities of the subjects were monitored on June 18, 1976 and December 25, 1976, days which corresponded to the height of the busy season and slack season, respectively. Food consumption was monitored in order to estimate energy expenditure on the two days. The time spent working on June 18 averaged 10 hours, whereas the average working time on December 25 was 4 hours. The average time spent milking and feeding the cows was approximately the same on both days. Most of the additional working time on June 18 involved harvesting fodder and silo working. The male farmer on the busiest farm consumed approximately 3570 kilocalories on June 18 and 2440 kilocalories on December 25, indicating an excess expenditure of approximately 1000 kilocalories during the busy season. Working time spent by the female subjects ranged from approximately 12 to 13.2 hours. Of this, time spent doing domestic chores ranged from 1 to 4.3 hours. These times were heavily influenced by the number of family members living on the farms. The authors conclude that despite the increasing use of agricultural machinery in Japan, many dairy farmers still spend long hours working. These long working hours cannot help but affect their health. In order to decrease this workload, the authors suggest that the mechanization of feeding and milking the animals must be upgraded and a better distribution of the workload must be implemented.
