Description:Occupational health services for farmers in Sweden were discussed. Agricultural production in Sweden was summarized. Most of the farming in Sweden is done on small family farms scattered throughout the country and they differ widely in production. There are almost no organized occupational health services for farmers. Although few studies on the environmental and health risks faced by Swedish farmers have been performed, those that have indicate that a clear need for health care exists. A new law promulgated on July 1, 1978 which stated that employers' responsibilities for providing occupational health services also extend to their families, has provided the basis for establishing an occupational health care program among farmers. A trial program has been established in six rural counties in southern and central Sweden. The program which is sponsored by the Swedish Federation of Farmers features a technical and medical component. The technical component focuses on identifying hazards in agricultural work and developing measures to counter them. The medical component is designed to investigate health conditions of the farmers and to provide treatment for occupational diseases. The program is intended to run for 3 to 5 years. If successful, it will be expanded to cover the entire country. [Description provided by NIOSH]
