  This statement reviewed surveillance activities of NIOSH with respect to the health and safety of workers in the United States as they have developed since 1984. Expansion has been occurring in the number of states participating with NIOSH in cooperative agreements to perform occupational health surveillance, reaching 19 states as compared to only six states in 1984. Surveillance has broadened to include occupational injuries and various occupational diseases and disorders. A workshop was held for project officers of the cooperative agreements and 17 states participated. Extensive discussions were held with the National Center for Health Statistics to aid in identifying ways in which two surveys conducted by this center could provide information concerning occupational illness and injury rates. A central coordinating activity has been established in the office of the NIOSH Director to detail the specific concerns relating to occupational illness and injury surveillance and develop methods for improving the techniques of surveillance and linking the findings to preventive efforts. Steps were also taken to improve the identification of occupational disorders by physicians. On site visits were made during this period to facilities and workplaces involved in manufacturing, construction, transportation and other utilities, services, wholesale and retail trade, hospitals and health care, oil and gas extraction and agriculture.
