  In this letter to the editor the authors detail several events occurring during the lifetime of a former colleague which brought to their minds several of the events in the field of occupational health and safety today. The colleague about whom the original article appeared was Dr. Alice Hamilton. The Alice Hamilton Occupational Safety and Health Science Award, established to recognize outstanding contributions to the field, was won by individuals researching the association between the mining of specific substances and occurrence of lung cancer. The connection between Dr. Hamilton's work among limestone workers and the resurvey of these workers by NIOSH in 1978 was also connected to current work to develop criteria for a standard for hand/arm vibration. Dr. Hamilton's efforts on behalf of working women are still being carried forward in current work particularly on reproductive hazards in the workplace. The authors of this letter stress the importance of the continuum in science from those who have pushed the frontiers back further in the past to those who must continue these efforts into the future.
