Identifying cost-benefit relationships as a basis for anthropozoonosis control.

  Cost/benefit relationships in anthropozoonosis control were discussed, with emphasis on developing countries and subsistence farmers. Changes have occurred for the rural farmer in recent years including an increase in their farm productivity, improved livestock production technology, increased income and education aspirations, improved health care, and a change in the economic base of their countries which makes some of these desires and aspirations more reachable. Planners for the future recognized that human disease is expensive and therefore social and economic developments are occurring to limit the expense of disease through better health care programs offered in rural farming communities. Many efforts have been made against the several anthropozoonoses which occur primarily to those engaged in the agricultural occupations and include anthrax, bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis, glanders, leptospirosis, schistosomiasis, and tetanus. The agricultural organization and the public health arms of the various world governments should become aware of each other's concerns and work together for more efficient control of these diseases and therefore achieve better farm production for the future as a result of stopping the animal diseases. Encouragement of effective animal health maintenance for economic reasons will also benefit public health interests. [Description provided by NIOSH]
