Description:A collection of 12 published articles and 4 articles in print which deal with investigations into the causes of byssinosis was presented. The publications resulted from efforts concerning the inhalation of cotton dust with its subsequent effects on the respiratory systems of those working in the mills. Specific papers were concerned with the effects of cotton bract extract on airway smooth muscle and nerves, direct measurement of hydrogen-peroxide released from rat alveolar macrophages, effects of a water extract of cotton bract in isolated guinea-pig trachealis smooth muscle, evidence of sequential opening and closing of lung units during inflation and deflation of rat lungs, improved operating parameters for the Pitt-3 aerosol generator during resuspension of respirable cotton dust, comparison of lung sounds and gas trapping in the study of airway mechanics, alterations in rat alveolar surfactant phospholipids and proteins induced by administration of chlorphentermine, interaction of a water extract of cotton bract with dog isolated airway smooth muscle, effects of a cotton bract extract on guinea-pig isolated airway smooth muscle, an overview of species differences in the effects of a water extract of cotton bract on isolated airway smooth muscle and effects of Escherichia- coli lipopolysaccharide, a system for exposing laboratory animals to cotton dust aerosol stabilized with feedback control, time course of pulmonary response to inhalation of cotton dust in guinea-pigs and rats, effect of dietary vitamin-C on guinea-pig pulmonary response to inhalation of cotton dust, pulmonary response of guinea-pigs to inhalation of cotton dust, mechanism of airflow interruption in guinea-pigs exposed to cotton dust, and the dose response relationships for pulmonary reactions of guinea-pigs to inhalation of cotton dust.
