Worksite Health Promotion Utilizing Health Risk Appraisal.

  A report on a project to modify the Centers for Disease Control version of the Health Risk Appraisal (HRA) for its use with blue collar workers was presented. The revised form was used for members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) at Norfolk Truck Assembly facility (SIC-3713) of the Ford Motor Company, with the assistance of the plant committee of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). A prototype HRA was designed and sent to the Norfolk EAP committee for evaluation and revision. Worksite hazard questions were not included, since the company felt it already had good physiological and real data on hazards. Two thousand questionnaires were then printed and were distributed by EAP coordinators. A feedback HRA evaluation form was included for half of the subjects. Based on evaluation of the questionnaire and feedback forms, the plan was to revise both forms for use at the next Ford plant. Strengths of the project included strong UAW, EAP committee, and management support. Weaknesses included gaps in preparation because of lack of group meetings, attributed to pressures for production at the plant, and late arrival of an introductory letter to the subjects.
