How to Use Workers' Compensation Data to Identify High-Risk Groups.

  The use of workers' compensation data to identify workers at high risk of occupational injury was discussed. The purposes of injury data analysis were reviewed. According to the author, compensation claim data can best be regarded as a supplementary source of information. For example, compensation records can be used to identify a certain department as a major contributor to severe occupational injuries. Once that has been done, the most complete injury reports maintained by the department can be analyzed to determine specific problems that should addressed by the safety program. Risk estimation was considered. The general principles for estimating risk were presented. Specific techniques for analyzing workers' compensation claims were given. These were based on obtaining values for two risk quantities, incidence ratio (IR) and incidence density (ID). IR was defined as the ratio of the number of new cases of injury among a specified group of workers during a certain time period to the total number of workers. ID was the number of new claims for a specific group of workers during a given time period divided by the total person shifts, person hours, or person years of work. Classification and coding problems associated with determining the numerators in the IRs or IDs were discussed. Using ranking methods to identify high risk groups was considered. Examples of using IRs and IDs to predict the risk of back strain or sprain in different occupational groups were given. [Description provided by NIOSH]
